Spring time can bring many new behaviours, often with our horses becoming more spirited, anxious, or stressed. As lush sugary grass fills the paddocks, and increased time outside continues, many horse owner seek calming supplements to help.
One of the most popular calmers currently is Magnesium. This is a naturally sourced mineral which is non-sedating and can promote nerve relaxation, and significantly reduces stress levels. Low magnesium in diets can also lead to increased anxiety, which is often exacerbated by spring grass, as this can be naturally low in magnesium at this time of year.
Many horses showing signs of anxiety or stress at pasture are advised to feed magnesium herbal supplements alongside main feeds to maintain a calm nature and lower heart rate, and also reduce reactivity. Research also suggests that when magnesium is fed alongside other calming herbs it can be more effective in reducing reactivity.
Where some horses only require magnesium, such as MagCalm, many require a blend of herbs found in SuperCalm. In SuperCalm Powder we mix magnesium with holy basil, winter cherry and amla. Both Holy basil and Winter Cherry are natural substances, acting as adaptogens which enable the body to adapt to stress and lower cortisol levels. Together this unique blend can reduce nervousness and excitability, and also improve focus (take a look at our SuperCalm Liquid for a magnesium free option!)
At Global Herbs, we also have a magnesium-free calming blend HerbalCalm, using solely Holy basil and Winter Cherry alongside Amla. Known to balance cortisol levels whilst being rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, an ideal solution to horses sensitive to magnesium.
