Spring time can bring many new behaviours, often with our horses becoming more spirited, anxious, or stressed. As lush sugary grass fills the paddocks, and increased time outside continues, many horse owner seek calming supplements to help.

One of the most popular calmers currently is Magnesium. This is a naturally sourced mineral which is non-sedating and can promote nerve relaxation, and significantly reduces stress levels. Low magnesium in diets can also lead to increased anxiety, which is often exacerbated by spring grass, as this can be naturally low in magnesium at this time of year.

Many horses showing signs of anxiety or stress at pasture are advised to feed magnesium herbal supplements alongside main feeds to maintain a calm nature and lower heart rate, and also reduce reactivity. Research also suggests that when magnesium is fed alongside other calming herbs it can be more effective in reducing reactivity.

Where some horses only require magnesium, such as MagCalm, many require a blend of herbs found in SuperCalm. In SuperCalm Powder we mix magnesium with holy basil, winter cherry and amla. Both Holy basil and Winter Cherry are natural substances, acting as adaptogens which enable the body to adapt to stress and lower cortisol levels. Together this unique blend can reduce nervousness and excitability, and also improve focus (take a look at our SuperCalm Liquid for a magnesium free option!)

At Global Herbs, we also have a magnesium-free calming blend HerbalCalm, using solely Holy basil and Winter Cherry alongside Amla. Known to balance cortisol levels whilst being rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, an ideal solution to horses sensitive to magnesium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can horses become more excitable in spring?

Spring brings several changes to a horse’s routine, including increased time outdoors, changing grass quality and richer, more sugary grazing. These seasonal changes can coincide with horses becoming more spirited, excitable or reactive.

What is a calmer for horses?

A horse calmer is a nutritional supplement designed to provide support for horses that may become excitable, nervous or reactive. Calmers can contain ingredients such as magnesium and selected herbs, depending on the product and its intended nutritional purpose.

Can magnesium help support a nervous horse?

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in normal nerve and muscle function. Magnesium supplements are commonly used as part of a nutritional approach for horses that may benefit from additional magnesium in their diet. However, whether supplementation is appropriate depends on the horse’s individual diet and needs.

Can I use a magnesium-free calmer for my horse?

Yes. Some horses may benefit from a magnesium-free herbal calming supplement. Global Herbs HerbalCalm is a magnesium-free blend containing Holy Basil, Winter Cherry and Amla, providing an alternative for horses where a magnesium-based product isn't preferred.

What herbs are used in natural horse calmers?

Different herbal calmers use different combinations of botanicals. Global Herbs' calming products include herbs such as Holy Basil, Winter Cherry and Amla, which have a long history of use within traditional herbal practices.

How can I help keep my horse calm in spring?

Alongside suitable nutritional support, maintaining a consistent routine, providing appropriate forage, allowing regular turnout and ensuring your horse has sufficient exercise can all contribute to their overall wellbeing. If a sudden change in behaviour occurs, it is important to consider whether there could be an underlying health or management issue.

How do I choose the right calmer for my horse?

The best option depends on your horse’s individual diet, temperament and nutritional requirements. If you are looking specifically for magnesium support, MagCalm may be appropriate; SuperCalm combines magnesium with herbs, while HerbalCalm provides a magnesium-free herbal option.

Can horse calmers be used alongside a normal feed?

Many horse calmers are designed to be added to a horse’s normal daily feed. Always follow the individual product’s feeding instructions and check the ingredients if your horse has specific dietary requirements or is receiving medication.
