Horses are large herbivores relying on complex microbial fermentation in the foregut through to the hindgut for healthy digestion and production of essential metabolizable energy. To achieve this, the gastrointestinal tract harbours a wide range of various microorganisms creating a harmonious microbiome – a ‘complex ecological community of commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protozoa.’ The gut microbiome regularly alters throughout the year however as the seasons change and we transition from summer to winter, we often see the biggest stress on the equine gut.

Winter months can bring a great deal of change particularly as the day length shortens and temperatures drop. We find ourselves changing nutrition with declines in pasture quality and having to give additional feed as well as changes in management, with more time stabled and less time exercised. These changing factors can have a huge implication on the equine microbiome, leading to unwanted dysbiosis. This dysbiosis or imbalance can have a negative impact on our ponies and horses, with prevention using gut support supplements being essential to ensuring a healthy gut microbiome and keeping our horses healthy during Winter.

Using Gut Support, with its combination of pre + probiotic herbal supplements such as Chebulic Myrobalan, Brewers Yeast and Saccharomyces cerevisiae which promote fibre digestion and increase the abundance of cellulolytic and lactate-utilising bacteria. This specific blend of herbs encourage healthy digestion and promotes gastric health.

Other recommended products are Psyllium Husk and Firm Up. With Firm Up containing kaolin, a natural binding clay and Beleric Myrobalan, this supports hind gut health and encourages the formation of normal droppings. Psyllium husk acts as a prebiotic, promoting the growth of healthy gut bacteria and nourishing the cells of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa. It is also highly absorbent of excess water in the gut.

Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through the winter months is vital for your horse’s overall wellbeing. Seasonal changes in forage, routine, and exercise can all place stress on the digestive system, making proactive support essential. By incorporating targeted supplements such as Gut Support, Firm Up, and Psyllium Husk, you can help stabilise the microbiome, encourage efficient digestion, and promote nutrient absorption. Ensuring your horse stays healthy, comfortable, and resilient throughout the colder season.
