The summer months are often the nicest of the year, however high temperatures and humidity can pose a huge risk to our horses. Heat stress or exhaustion can occur quickly, causing rapid dehydration, lethargy, diarrhoea and dangerously, heat stroke. All horses are at risk of being affected with overheating, with our young, elderly and ill and obese horses being at higher risk.
A horse can happily balance and regulate their body temperature between 37.5-38.5 degrees when in their thermoneutral zone (this being 5-25 degrees). Heat and humidity exceeding this thermoneutral zone can quickly cause our horses to go into heat stress and exhaustion.
How to prevent overheating:
-
Reducing excessive exercise
-
Not turning out in direct sunlight or turning out without adequate shade
-
Ensuring areas have ventilation and/or a breeze
-
Avoiding long travelling times
-
Access to cool fresh water
-
Adding in essential electrolytes, salt licks and supplements
At Global Herbs we understand the importance of preventing issues such as Heat Stress and Heat Stroke and have carefully curated a mix of herbs tailored to your horse.
Heat Stress: this is a key supplement in our extensive range, created to support the horse's body in maintaining normal function during hot weather and exercise. The antioxidant properties of our herbs support the whole immune system and aid in reducing overall excitement. Carefully selected herbs restore and rebuild the body particularly when under stress, such as Asparagus which is cooling and rejuvenating, Shilajit which aids rebuilding quality of muscles and Ashwaghanda which enables rebuilding and restoring quality in the body.
We also highly recommend our blend of Herbal Electrolyte: This must be used daily and is an essential addition to our horses feed in the hot summer months and during strenuous exercise particularly when excesses sweating and rapid dehydration may occur. Research tells us that dehydration impairs performance, both mentally and physically.
Horses require a great deal of water and a lot of electrolytes and importantly, a correct balance of electrolytes in order to optimize neuromuscular function.
Our specific herbal blend maintains hydration and supports the replacement of essential salts, facilitating quick muscle recovery and preventing life threatening dehydration.
Our herbal blend contains all essential electrolytes, such as dextrose, sodium and potassium, but in addition contains a mix of Amla Berry, Holy Basil and Winter Cherry which provide a strong antioxidant action helping to support a healthy immune system. A hydrated horse is a healthy horse.
In addition to this, using our FlyFree supplement daily to reduce irritation by flies can also help reduce stress and discomfort during the summer months.
