Hot dry conditions can lead to hooves becoming hard, brittle, and cracked. This is due to lack of moisture which creates a brittle hoof prone to splitting and discomfort. Sore hooves lead to reduced performance and wellbeing in our horses. Dusty, hard, dry pastures add extra wear to hooves meaning regular maintenance is essential, particularly during the drier months.

Regular cleaning to remove abrasive material such as stones, dirt and debris help spot signs of hoof irritation, including cracks and punctures. Removing mud and manure will reduce the risk of bacterial infections, this all helps us ensure a happy healthy hoof.

Nutrition also plays a huge role in how healthy our horses hooves are. Good quality feed as well as feeding supplements can lead to improvement of hoof health and it is particularly essential to ensure our horses are not lacking vitamins and trace elements.

Supplements with Zinc, Edible Stemmed Vine and MSM are particularly good for ensuring healthy hooves.
  • Zinc is an essential trace element, supporting hoof integrity it also helps to prevent the destruction of keratin. Zinc is a key ingredient in our Hoof supplement, a powerful combination of key nutrients to encourage strong hoof growth.
  • Edible stemmed vine (Cissus quadrangularis) is a traditional herbal medicine used to promote bone and tissue healing, supporting natural keratin production. Found in our StrongBone supplement, a herbal blend designed to promote strong and resilient joints, bones, and feet.
  • MSM supports hoof health by providing the essential building blocks needed to bond keratin fibers together. Use pure MSM to soothe and support muscles and joints, while support healthy hooves.
These supplements all contribute to strong and healthy hooves, particularly during the dry summer period.

At Global Herbs we also have Seaweed. This is a valuable, natural source of vitamins, trace minerals and amino acids which are essential for healthy horn growth and strong hooves. By supplying natural calcium, magnesium, these combined with amino acids act as building blocks for keratin, the primary protein in horses hooves.

Healthy hooves are built from the inside out. During hot, dry weather, combining regular hoof care with a balanced diet and targeted nutritional support can help maintain strong, resilient hooves and reduce the risk of cracks, brittleness, and discomfort. By ensuring your horse receives the essential vitamins, minerals, and herbal support needed for healthy horn growth, you can help keep them comfortable, sound, and ready to enjoy the summer months!
