Horses are large herbivores relying on complex microbial fermentation in the foregut through to the hindgut for healthy digestion and production of essential metabolizable energy. To achieve this, the gastrointestinal tract harbours a wide range of various microorganisms creating a harmonious microbiome – a ‘complex ecological community of commensal, symbiotic and pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, archaea, fungi, and protozoa.’ The gut microbiome regularly alters throughout the year however as the seasons change and we transition from summer to winter, we often see the biggest stress on the equine gut.

Winter months can bring a great deal of change particularly as the day length shortens and temperatures drop. We find ourselves changing nutrition with declines in pasture quality and having to give additional feed as well as changes in management, with more time stabled and less time exercised. These changing factors can have a huge implication on the equine microbiome, leading to unwanted dysbiosis. This dysbiosis or imbalance can have a negative impact on our ponies and horses, with prevention using gut support supplements being essential to ensuring a healthy gut microbiome and keeping our horses healthy during Winter.

Using Gut Support, with its combination of pre + probiotic herbal supplements such as Chebulic Myrobalan, Brewers Yeast and Saccharomyces cerevisiae which promote fibre digestion and increase the abundance of cellulolytic and lactate-utilising bacteria. This specific blend of herbs encourage healthy digestion and support gastric health.

Other recommended products are Psyllium Husk and Firm Up. With Firm Up containing kaolin, a natural binding clay and Beleric Myrobalan, this supports hind gut health and the formation of normal droppings. Psyllium husk acts as a prebiotic, supporting the maintenance of healthy gut bacteria and the cells of the gastrointestinal tract mucosa. It is also highly absorbent of excess water in the gut.

Maintaining a healthy gut microbiome through the winter months is vital for your horse’s overall wellbeing. Seasonal changes in forage, routine, and exercise can all place stress on the digestive system, making proactive support essential. By incorporating targeted supplements such as Gut Support, Firm Up, and Psyllium Husk, you can help stabilise the microbiome, supporting digestion, and nutrient absorption. Ensuring your horse stays healthy, comfortable, and resilient throughout the colder season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is gut health important for horses?

A healthy digestive system is essential for horses because they rely on microbial fermentation throughout the gastrointestinal tract to digest fibre and produce energy. Supporting a balanced gut microbiome can therefore form an important part of maintaining overall health and wellbeing.

Why can winter affect a horse's digestive system?

Winter can bring several changes that may affect digestive health, including reduced pasture quality, changes in forage and feed, increased time spent stabled and changes to exercise routines. These changes can place additional stress on the digestive system and influence the balance of the equine microbiome.

What is the equine gut microbiome?

The equine gut microbiome is the complex community of microorganisms living within a horse's gastrointestinal tract. It includes bacteria, fungi, protozoa and archaea, which play an important role in processes such as fibre fermentation and digestion.

How can I support my horse's gut health in winter?

Maintaining a consistent feeding routine, providing appropriate forage and making dietary changes gradually can all help support digestive health. During winter, nutritional support such as prebiotic and probiotic ingredients may also be considered as part of a balanced feeding programme.

What are prebiotics and probiotics for horses?

Prebiotics are substances that can support the growth and activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut, while probiotics provide live microorganisms. Both are commonly used as part of nutritional approaches to support a healthy equine microbiome.

What is Psyllium Husk used for in horses?

Psyllium Husk is a source of soluble fibre and can act as a prebiotic, supporting beneficial gut bacteria. It is also highly absorbent and can help manage excess water within the digestive tract.

Can changing my horse's forage affect their gut health?

Yes. Changes in forage type, availability and quality can influence the horse's diet and therefore the microorganisms within the digestive tract. During winter, when pasture quality often declines and horses may rely more heavily on conserved forage, it is important to manage dietary changes carefully and support consistent fibre intake.

How can I help maintain my horse's gut health when they are stabled more in winter?

When horses spend more time stabled, their forage, feeding routine, exercise and daily environment can all change. Maintaining regular access to appropriate forage, keeping feeding routines consistent and providing suitable nutritional support can help support normal digestion throughout the winter months.

What are the signs that my horse may have digestive problems?

Changes in appetite, droppings, weight, behaviour or general wellbeing can indicate that something is not quite right. Digestive issues can have many different causes, so if you notice persistent or concerning changes in your horse, it is important to seek advice from your vet.
